December Coues Deer Tag + Dog’s in Heat = Perfect Storm

As many hunters do, I have a very sick mind that obsesses over more and better ways to attract game animals.   I once demonstrated this as I cuddled up behind a moo cow decoy and moved into archery range on an antelope. Hilarious stuff.

But, now, I’ve crossed a line, I think. My 5 pound Brussels Griffon (don’t ask) is in heat AND my 14 year old stepson has a December whitetail tag we plan on hunting for all next week and Christmas. My thought: Is this the perfect storm?????

Afterall, many folks drag doe in estrous scent rags through the woods with them to attract rutting bucks. Why shouldn’t I just put a muzzle on that pup and walk here along with us??? Heck, she’s only 5 pounds, I can essentially drag her from my boot like a scent rag.  Or, maybe I can just swab her ‘area’ or train her to pee in a bucket for the next couple weeks?

Now, see, the obsession turns to sickness…….

Arizona Junior Cow Elk Hunt- Lots of action

Found these antler sheds in a steep canyon.

Well, we had a great hunt.  We hunted two full days and a third morning covering at least 15 miles on foot.  Wyatt did a great job and had the crosshairs on a group of cows from 200 yards.  However, a single one never separated the group and they just never turned broadside to present a good clean shot.  Either a bush got in the way, or another cow stood behind the target cow.

Great job by Wyatt to use discretion and not shoot in the heat of the moment.

We saw lots of bull elk and could have tagged at least four different 300″ plus bulls if we had a bull tag.

Here is a video of some of the things we saw.  We heard a lot bugling, and really close.  The camera did not pick that up well.

I had a great time and I’m very proud of Wyatt’s efforts and level of satisfaction even though he didn’t fill his tag!!!!

I’m certainly not perfect, but I don’t think I ‘m a fan of this one.  I’d like it much more if the meat was harvested and given to the poor.  Seems like a waste to me.  But, I see the farmers end of it, too.
